## Summary

Clint Eastwood’s 2006 war film *Flags of Our Fathers* is now available to stream free on Pluto TV this month. The film’s arrival coincides with its 20th anniversary and renewed attention to war films, while bringing a new audience to a work that prompted a public disagreement between Eastwood and Spike Lee over its depiction of Black servicemen.

Eastwood said the film deliberately focused on a small group of white characters; Lee criticised its lack of Black representation and later made *Miracle at St. Anna*, centred on Black soldiers. *Flags of Our Fathers* earned $65 million worldwide against a reported $90 million budget and has a 76% Rotten Tomatoes score. Its companion film, *Letters from Iwo Jima*, told the Japanese perspective, earned $68 million on a budget under $20 million and received a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
