## Key points

- *High Plains Drifter* is free to watch on YouTube.
- Eastwood’s Stranger is darker than his familiar Western gunslingers.
- The film leaves the Stranger’s identity unresolved.

## Summary

*High Plains Drifter*, Clint Eastwood’s 1973 Western, is now available to stream free on YouTube. The update brings renewed attention to a film that mixes Western conventions with horror and religious imagery, making Eastwood’s gunslinger unusually eerie and ruthless.

Eastwood plays the Stranger, who agrees to protect Lago from two outlaws returning for revenge after the townspeople arranged the murder of the sheriff and framed the outlaws. The film leaves open whether the Stranger is the sheriff’s ghost or his brother; Eastwood said he deliberately kept the character’s identity ambiguous. The article also notes that an early rape scene, and the film’s suggestion that the woman enjoys it, has aged very poorly.
