Three major news outlets, CNN, Politico and MS NOW, have filed a lawsuit against President Trump and other White House officials after their journalists were banned from the White House complex. The news organisations argue that the ban, imposed without notice or due process after they published coverage the President deemed unfavourable, represents a direct assault on the First Amendment and constitutes unconstitutional retaliation against the press for negative reporting.

The White House revoked the journalists' credentials on Saturday and removed CNN from its press pool the following Monday. The lawsuit, which names White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, Secret Service Director Sean Curran and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles as defendants alongside Trump, claims violations of both the First Amendment (retaliation and viewpoint discrimination) and the Fifth Amendment's due process clause. The outlets are seeking an immediate temporary restraining order and injunction to restore their access, arguing that the ban threatens not only their own organisations but sets a dangerous precedent for all news media and undermines the public's right to independent information about government.
