Bari Weiss takeover fears grip CNN staff as Paramount-Warner Bros deal nears completion

Variety · 2 months ago

CNN staff are reportedly anxious about their future as Paramount Skydance moves closer to completing its acquisition of parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, with many fearing the network will be handed to Bari Weiss, currently editor in chief of Paramount-owned CBS News. The concern matters because CNN remains a significant profit generator and a key bargaining chip in Warner's carriage negotiations, yet insiders worry Paramount's executives neither understand nor care about running the news operation for long-term health, potentially damaging a valuable but complex asset.

Warner Bros. Discovery told the SEC that CNN is on track to make $600 million in profit on $1.8 billion in revenue in 2026, and aims to add $100 million in revenue annually through 2030 via a digital subscription push. Paramount, which will carry roughly $79 billion in net debt after the deal and has pledged to cut more than $6 billion in costs, will need that cash. Staff point to CBS News under Weiss — where credibility and ratings have slipped and figures such as Anderson Cooper, Claudia Milne and Scott MacFarlane have departed — as a warning sign, while CNN legal correspondent Paula Reid has already declined to renew her contract, citing expected chaos, and is set to join MS NOW.

  • CNN staff fear Bari Weiss will take charge after the Paramount deal.
  • CNN is projected to earn $600m profit on $1.8bn revenue in 2026.
  • Correspondent Paula Reid is leaving CNN for MS NOW.
