Maddy Cusack’s coach welcomed her presence in the squad, inquest hears

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Jonathan Morgan, the former Sheffield United coach of footballer Maddy Cusack, told an inquest into her death that he was "really happy" to have her on his team and had offered her a full-time contract. Cusack, 27, was found unconscious at her family home in Horsley, Derbyshire, on 20 September 2023 and pronounced dead the same day, and the hearing at Chesterfield Coroner's Court is examining the circumstances surrounding her death, including her working relationship with Morgan. His evidence stands in sharp contrast to accounts from Cusack's family and others, making his testimony a central and contested element of the inquest.

Morgan, who coached Cusack from February 2023, said he had made her vice-captain as a "big sign of respect" and wanted her opinions on his leadership team. The inquest heard he raised concerns in August 2023 that she was "not well" and asked club doctor Dr Subhasis Basu to speak to her, though he said he had not flagged any risk of self-harm or suicide. The court was told that no documentation was made of a phone call on 11 September 2023, in which Cusack said she had seen her GP, been given medication and would take time off, and that Morgan did not consult HR, saying he had "escalated to who I thought was the right person". His account contrasts with earlier evidence in which Cusack's mother called him her daughter's "nemesis" and Morgan told the FA that Cusack was "generally a liar".
