A US Coast Guard officer was shot dead in what police believe was a random attack in a Seattle-area neighbourhood, and his family is now offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to his killer. Connor Scott Overstreet, 29, an active-duty lieutenant, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in Bryn Mawr-Skyway, Washington, in the early hours of 23 August, and died despite deputies' efforts to save him. His death matters both as a personal tragedy for his wife and family and as an unsolved crime that has left investigators appealing to the public for help.

The King County Sheriff's Office is treating the killing as a homicide and has asked local residents to check dash cam and surveillance footage for anyone or any vehicles seen between 12.30am and 1.15am that night. Overstreet's wife, Madeline, and father, Brennan, have publicly pleaded for information, and an online fundraiser to boost the reward had raised more than $57,000 by Saturday night, with surplus funds earmarked for the family and a charity Overstreet supported. His remains were returned with full honours to Coast Guard Air Station Ventura on Friday, and a memorial service is scheduled for 3 September.
