The US Coast Guard intercepted a suspected drug-smuggling boat roughly 50 miles off Puerto Rico, seizing cocaine valued at more than $54 million and detaining five people. The operation highlights continued efforts by US agencies to disrupt transnational drug trafficking routes in the Caribbean.

The Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon, supported by Customs and Border Protection air and marine operations, stopped the vessel on 22 August. Officials said they recovered an estimated 7,250 pounds of cocaine, while the boat was destroyed because it posed a navigation hazard; no charges had been announced. The seizure follows a separate offload in Miami of more than 75,000 pounds of illicit narcotics reportedly valued at $473 million.
