Codeberg, a volunteer-run software hosting community, has voted to prohibit projects largely written by generative AI, describing the move as a defence of human collaboration in free and open-source software. The decision matters because it reflects growing resistance within parts of the FLOSS community to AI-generated code, its resource demands and concerns over trust, maintenance and copyright.

The Berlin-based non-profit behind Codeberg said it will not train AI on users’ code or data, and updated its terms to bar projects mostly composed of code generated by tools such as Claude or OpenAI Codex. Supporters cited rising hardware costs, including SSD and memory prices, energy and environmental impacts, increased work for maintainers and the risk of “licence laundering”; they said an SSD previously costing €700 now costs about €3,700. Enforcement is likely to be limited unless projects attract attention, given Codeberg’s constrained staff and resources.
