## Key points

- Miami leads the first playoff rankings.
- Indiana is fourth despite its loss to Ohio State.
- Ohio State could miss the 12-team field under current rankings.

## Summary

Miami opened the first official College Football Playoff rankings at No. 1, remaining unbeaten after a close win over North Carolina. The ranking matters because only 12 teams will make the playoff, and the committee’s choices will shape the race for a national title as the season continues.

Georgia, Utah, Indiana and Alabama completed the top five, with Indiana ranked fourth despite an earlier loss to Ohio State and a narrow overtime win over Minnesota. Ohio State was 12th, but would miss the bracket if the season ended today because Boise State, ranked 25th, could take a place reserved for a conference champion. Notre Dame, ranked 11th, faces Miami next; the committee chair said the Irish lack a signature win against a ranked team.
