Joe Anderson, Englewood, Colorado's mayor pro tem, died on Friday morning after collapsing while hiking Quandary Peak, a popular 14,271-foot mountain in Summit County. Fellow hikers performed CPR before first responders took over resuscitation efforts, but the 45-year-old could not be revived; an official cause of death has not yet been determined. His sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from city officials who described it as a significant loss for Englewood.

Anderson was first elected to represent District 3 on Englewood City Council in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023, later being chosen by colleagues as mayor pro tem. Before his political career he worked as a pastor and co-founded a coalition tackling homelessness, and on the council he focused on affordable housing, infrastructure and stormwater system repairs following 2018 flooding. Mayor Othoniel Sierra and outgoing City Manager Shawn Lewis both praised him as a compassionate and effective leader who supported colleagues personally as well as professionally.
