## Key points

- BioWare’s closure has left Mass Effect fans grieving.
- Jennifer Hale hopes fans could one day own the series.
- The Save Mass Effect petition has passed 300,000 signatures.

## Summary

EA has closed BioWare and cancelled its in-development Mass Effect: Universe project, prompting grief among staff and fans. Despite the closures, Commander Shepard voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer remain hopeful that the series could continue, possibly under fan ownership, though EA still controls the franchise.

EA laid off BioWare’s remaining roughly 50 employees on 21 October, ending the studio’s 30-year history. Fans have launched a petition to save Mass Effect, which has more than 300,000 signatures, and are seeking Canadian government attention for BioWare’s closure. Hale and Meer support the petition but have no organising role; former BioWare leaders disagree on whether EA might sell the studio’s intellectual property.
