Common problems with Apple Wallet and how to fix them

Engadget · 18 minutes ago

Apple Wallet is generally reliable for storing payment cards, transit passes, tickets and boarding passes, but users can run into a range of common problems, from payments being declined to cards refusing to add. Understanding the typical causes and fixes matters because these issues can be frustrating when they occur unexpectedly, particularly at checkout or when travelling, though most can be resolved quickly without contacting support.

The most frequent complaint is Apple Pay cards suddenly stopping working, usually because a card has expired or been reissued; removing and re-adding it via the Wallet app's Card Details menu typically fixes this, though it may require re-verification with the bank. Other fixes include updating iOS through Settings, checking that Apple Pay and Apple Cash are supported in the device's set region, ensuring Face ID or Touch ID is enabled for Contactless & Payments, and enabling two-factor authentication on the Apple Account. For incompatible tickets or passes, third-party apps like IntoWallet can convert QR codes into Wallet passes, a feature also built into iOS 27, while persistent problems may simply reflect an Apple system outage, checkable via Apple's System Status page.

  • Removing and re-adding a card fixes most Apple Pay payment failures.
  • Check iOS updates, device region and Face ID/Touch ID settings.
  • iOS 27 can convert QR codes into Wallet passes automatically.
