Commonwealth Games chiefs are dishing out free tickets to the Tartan Army… but they insist it’s NOT because of poor ticket sales

Daily Mail · 2 months ago

Organisers of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are giving away free tickets to members of the Tartan Army, Scotland's dedicated football supporters, as a gesture of thanks to fans who travelled to the United States to back the national team during the World Cup. The move drew questions over whether it reflected weak ticket sales, but organisers firmly denied this, insisting instead that demand had been strong across the event.

Members of the Scotland Supporters Club were emailed an offer of up to four free tickets each across a range of sports and sessions. These include the Para Powerlifting at the SEC Armadillo on 24 July, which will feature the games' first medal, 3×3 basketball between Scotland and Australia, boxing on 25 July, and a morning athletics session on 27 July featuring the 100m heats. Organisers pointed to "phenomenal demand" and "hundreds of thousands of tickets sold" without releasing figures. Glasgow is hosting a scaled-down games from 23 July to 2 August after Victoria, Australia, withdrew over rising costs, with the opening ceremony set to feature singer KT Tunstall.
