Community rallies round after park wildfire

A community clean-up has taken place at Manor Fields Park in Sheffield after around a third of the 24-hectare site was destroyed by a wildfire on 13 August. More than 75 residents, local groups and social enterprise members took part in the litter-picking event, reflecting strong local attachment to the park, which sits on the site of the former Great Sheffield Deer Park and features meadows, woodlands and sculptures.

The fire, not believed to have been started deliberately, destroyed part of a wildflower meadow originally designed by the late horticulturalist Nigel Dunnett. Green Estate, the social enterprise that manages the site, said two-thirds of the park remains unaffected and expects most of the damaged grassland to recover quickly. The clean-up was organised jointly by Green Estate, Friends of Manor Fields Park and the Manor After School Kids Klub, which has continued using the site for activities and is now incorporating fire safety lessons into its forest school sessions.
