Compulsory purchase considered for roundabout plan

Barnsley Council is set to seek approval for the use of compulsory purchase powers to acquire land needed for a major upgrade of the Stairfoot roundabout. The A635/A633 scheme would widen the roundabout to three continuous traffic lanes and boost capacity on several approach roads, aiming to cut delays and vehicle idling while accommodating planned housing and employment growth in the area.

If councillors approve the move on 9 September, the council would be able to acquire the necessary plots, though specific details of the affected land have not yet been made public. The wider plans include straightening approaches from Wombwell Lane and Bleachcroft Way, widening the Grange Lane junction, converting existing bus lanes into general traffic lanes with a new bus lay-by, replacing the Trans Pennine Trail bridge over Grange Lane, and improving footways and crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. The scheme, whose final design followed a January 2024 public consultation, is funded through Barnsley's share of the government's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement with backing from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority; a cabinet report will set out land requirements, negotiation progress and whether the compulsory purchase process could delay a construction start originally planned for later this summer.

  • Barnsley Council may use compulsory purchase to enable Stairfoot roundabout upgrade.
  • Scheme adds lanes, replaces a bridge, and improves cycling/walking routes.
  • Decision due 9 September; could affect planned summer construction start.
