Content Creators vs. Emmys: Dropout Shut Out Again, ‘Subway Takes’ Lands First Nomination

Variety · 1 month ago

The Television Academy has offered limited recognition to online content creators in its latest round of Emmy nominations, announced on Wednesday. Kareem Rahma's viral YouTube series "Subway Takes", which features man-on-the-street interviews conducted on New York City's subway, earned its first nomination in the outstanding short form comedy, drama or variety series category. However, the indie streamer Dropout — formerly known as CollegeHumor — was shut out once again, failing to secure its first Emmy nod despite mounting its biggest awards push to date.

"Subway Takes" was nominated alongside "The Daily Show: Desi Lydic Foxsplains", "Colbert Before Air", "The Randy Rainbow Show" and Netflix's "Bad Thoughts". Dropout had submitted in 11 categories, putting forward its game show "Game Changer", hosted by CEO Sam Reich, and the improvisational interview series "Very Important People". Sean Evans' hugely popular "Hot Ones", which has amassed more than four billion views, was also overlooked in the outstanding variety series race. Final-round voting runs from 17-26 August, with the Creative Arts Emmys and Governors Gala on 5-6 September and the Primetime Emmy Awards airing on 14 September on NBC.
