Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, has died aged 84 in a United Nations prison hospital in The Hague. His death matters because he was one of the most prominent figures prosecuted over atrocities committed during the 1992–95 wars in the former Yugoslavia.

Mladić received a life sentence in 2017, which was upheld on appeal in 2021, after being found responsible for crimes including genocide during the Bosnian war. He evaded capture for 16 years after the conflict before being arrested in Serbia in 2011; a UN court rejected his request for release in May despite describing his condition as dire, saying he was receiving appropriate palliative care.
