Legendary's Apple TV Monsterverse series has expanded its cast with the addition of Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson and Nyasha Hatendi as series regulars, Deadline has reported, though the roles they will play have not been disclosed. They join a line-up already led by Wyatt Russell, alongside Millie Brady and Pilou Asbaek, in what stands as the franchise's first major scripted television spin-off since the film series began.

The show, from showrunner Joby Harold, centres on Colonel Lee Shaw, played by Russell, an American operative who in 1984 undertakes a covert Cold War mission to prevent the Soviet Union unleashing a Titan powerful enough to destroy the United States. Shaw first appeared in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, in which an older version of the character was played by Russell's real-life father, Kurt Russell. The series forms part of Legendary's wider Monsterverse, which spans films including Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with a further sequel, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, due in 2027.

New here? Start with this

Since the Cold War, the Godzilla and King Kong films have grown into a shared "Monsterverse", a series of connected movies from the studio Legendary that includes Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Apple TV is now making this franchise's first big scripted television spin-off, expanding the story beyond cinema screens for the first time.

The new series follows Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative on a secret 1984 Cold War mission to stop the Soviet Union from unleashing a monstrous "Titan" capable of destroying the United States. The character was introduced, as an older man, in the earlier Apple TV show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, where he was played by veteran actor Kurt Russell. In the new prequel-style series, a younger version of Shaw is played by Kurt Russell's son, Wyatt Russell.

The show is led by showrunner Joby Harold and already features Wyatt Russell alongside Millie Brady and Pilou Asbaek. Casting news matters here because it signals how the production is taking shape ahead of release, and the franchise remains commercially significant, with another film instalment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, due in 2027.
