Could Rotherham be UK’s first Town of Culture?

feeds.bbci.co.uk · 4 hours ago

Rotherham has been shortlisted in the competition to become the UK's first designated Town of Culture, prompting an enthusiastic response from residents, local figures and politicians. The South Yorkshire town was narrowed down from 400 applicants to a final 15, and its leaders hope the recognition can mark a positive turning point for a place still recovering from the child sexual exploitation scandal exposed by the 2014 Jay Report. If it wins, Rotherham would receive £3m to fund cultural events in 2028.

Rotherham is the only Yorkshire town on the shortlist, appearing alongside Birkenhead, Grimsby, Pontypridd and the Isle of Bute; each finalist now receives £60,000 to develop their bid. Local backers, including Labour MP Sarah Champion and council leader Chris Read, pointed to the town's cultural assets, such as literacy charity Grimm & Co and community arts body Flux Rotherham, and noted it was recently named the world's first Children's Capital of Culture. An independent panel will choose winners in the small, medium and large categories early next year, with the overall winner taking the £3m prize and the title, while two runners-up receive £250,000 each.
