## Key points

- Lancashire will not renew Anderson’s contract.
- Several counties may offer him a route to keep playing.
- He took 50 wickets in Division Two last summer.

## Summary

James Anderson will leave Lancashire after the county decided not to offer him a new contract, despite his plan to play for another season. The 44-year-old, England’s leading wicket-taker, must now decide whether to retire or continue his career elsewhere; several counties are interested in speaking to him.

Anderson took 50 wickets in Division Two last summer and was named Lancashire’s County Championship player of the year. A move would depend on the terms, the role offered and the practicalities of travelling from his home in Cheshire, while his age and past calf problems present risks. He has played for Lancashire since 2001 and took 704 Test wickets for England before retiring from international cricket in 2024.
