New details show Ronaldo’s international retirement followed a falling-out with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus: after being left on the bench and told he was not expected to start the next match, Ronaldo left the team’s training camp. He has announced he intends to end his 23-year Portugal career, though he will continue playing at club level.

Ronaldo made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for Portugal, both international records. He captained the team to Euro 2016 and helped win the Nations League in 2019 and 2025; his last appearance was a 1-0 win over Wales on 24 September. Portugal’s football federation praised his service and plans a tribute, while Ronaldo has scored 985 career goals and is pursuing 1,000.
