## Key points

- Crockett argued Stevens’ endorsement of Rogers could help El-Sayed with Black voters.
- Stevens had drawn strong support from Black voters in the Democratic primary.
- The endorsement’s effect on the Senate race remains uncertain.

## Summary

US Representative Jasmine Crockett said Haley Stevens may have done Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed “a favour” with Black voters by endorsing his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, just before Michigan’s election. Her assessment was a political judgement, not evidence of a change in voting intentions. Stevens had won strong support from Black voters in Detroit during the Democratic primary, making her decision to appear with Rogers particularly consequential for both campaigns.

Stevens said she could not support El-Sayed after their relationship deteriorated and raised concerns about campaign advertising she considered offensive to Black and Jewish voters. Her endorsement drew criticism from Democrats, while Republicans presented it as a chance to attract voters who usually back the party’s nominee. El-Sayed continued campaigning for turnout in Detroit. Whether Stevens’ move helps Rogers, strengthens support for El-Sayed or has little effect will depend on voters’ decisions at the ballot box.
