Crystal Fox has joined the cast of Hulu and Sony Pictures Television's untitled Cable Guy pilot, a project inspired by but not a remake of the 1996 Jim Carrey film. She joins previously announced series regulars Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr. and Natasha Rothwell, adding to a cast built around a story that reimagines the film's premise for the streaming age. The casting matters as another example of studios mining beloved 1990s comedies for fresh, tonally different small-screen adaptations rather than straight remakes.

Fox will play Lynette, the mother of Steven (Wayans Jr.) and Gina (Rothwell), who worries her son is adrift after a break-up and ends up falling down social media rabble holes herself. The pilot follows old-school cable technician Chip Douglas (Johnson), whose isolated life changes when a call to reconnect Steven's cable service rekindles a childhood friendship that curdles into obsession, exploring the darker side of modern male friendship. Johnson and Wayans Jr. also executive produce, with Rob Rosell, Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas as co-showrunners, and Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty among the additional executive producers. Fox is known for roles in In the Heat of the Night, The Haves and Have Nots, His & Hers and The Big Door Prize.
