Maggie Gyllenhaal has made a 17-minute short film titled "Flesh Impact", starring Dakota Johnson and Ellen Burstyn as different versions of Marilyn Monroe, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2026. The project marks the centenary of Monroe's birth and was produced with the blessing of estate holders Authentic Brands Group, arriving as Gyllenhaal also takes on the role of jury president at the festival.

Johnson plays Monroe at the height of her fame, while Burstyn portrays an imagined older version of the star, who died aged 36 in 1962; Peter Sarsgaard and Sepideh Moafi also feature. The film, presented by car brand Genesis, was made with a creative team including production designer Karen Murphy and cinematographer Lawrence Sher, with Gyllenhaal describing it as a "modern lens" reclaiming Monroe's story. Burstyn will also appear in Kornel Mundruczó's "Place to Be" at Venice and is due to receive a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.
