Dan Aykroyd Reveals What the Original Ghostbusters Costumes Looked Like

IGN · 3 hours ago

Ghostbusters co-creator Dan Aykroyd has shared the original costume design for the 1984 film, revealing that the iconic Ghostbusters jumpsuits were initially conceived with helmets before the idea was scrapped. Aykroyd, who also played Ray Stantz and co-wrote the screenplay with Harold Ramis, posted the concept art on X, noting he was "glad we lost the helmet." The reveal offers fans a rare glimpse into the franchise's early creative development and how its now-famous look evolved before release.

The early design, illustrated by John Daveikis, featured a different coloured outfit to the khaki flightsuits ultimately used in the film, along with a proton pack of a different size and shape. The helmet itself resembled those worn by Rebel pilots in Star Wars, while the logo was a rough precursor to the now-iconic red-circled ghost emblem. Aykroyd's post also revisits other franchise trivia, including that the film was almost titled Ghostblasters or Ghoststoppers due to rights issues, following the poorly received 2024 sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
