Dane Cook’s Brother Stole $12 Million From Comedian, Hid Bricks of Cash in Pasta Sauce
A new documentary reveals that Dane Cook's half-brother and former business manager, Darryl McCauley, embezzled at least $12 million from the comedian, concealing bricks of cash in pasta sauce containers. "Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story", premiering on 29 September, explores the 2008 scandal that upended the comedian's finances and his relationship with McCauley, who had also aspired to be a stand-up comic before becoming a corrections officer and later Cook's financial handler.
McCauley pleaded guilty to larceny, embezzlement and related charges alongside his wife, Erika, was ordered to repay the $12 million, and served a six-year prison sentence before vanishing. The documentary details how McCauley withdrew sums as large as $100,000 from Cook's accounts undetected, and later stashed piles of cash in a safe and wrapped in plastic inside pasta sauce jars. Cook says he believes the true amount stolen may exceed $12 million and suspects others know more about the missing money.
