Variety is set to honour British filmmaker Danny Boyle with its Creative Impact in Directing Award at the Venice Film Festival, recognising a career spanning "Trainspotting," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Steve Jobs" and the "28 Days Later" franchise. The award will be presented on Tuesday at Variety's pre-opening night party, coinciding with the Venice debut of Boyle's latest film "Ink," which opens the festival on 2 September.

"Ink," based on James Graham's award-winning play, dramatises the 1969 birth of Rupert Murdoch's tabloid empire and stars Jack O'Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy, all of whom will join Boyle at the Venice event alongside Graham and producers Tracey Seaward, Tessa Ross and Michael Ellenberg. Boyle previously won the Best Director Oscar for "Slumdog Millionaire" and recently returned to his zombie franchise with "28 Years Later." "Ink" is due in select theatres on 11 December before streaming on Netflix from 8 January in the US and Latin America, with a Toronto Film Festival debut and Studiocanal-led international release also planned; previous recipients of the Variety award include Guillermo Del Toro and Jacques Audiard.
