## Key points

- Mailers target Republicans in six battleground House races.
- Critics say the claims could suppress Republican turnout.
- The group’s funding and backers are unclear.

## Summary

The American Forge Coalition, a newly formed group describing itself as anti-globalist and pro-American, has sent mailers attacking Republicans in several closely contested US House races. Republican campaigns and other critics allege the effort is designed to mislead or discourage Republican voters shortly before the midterm election, though the article does not establish who is behind the group or its intentions.

The mailers accuse some candidates of being insufficiently conservative on immigration or abortion. The article says those claims misrepresent the positions of several candidates: three support a bill offering some undocumented migrants a route to temporary legal status after checks and fees, while two candidates describe themselves as pro-life. The coalition is registered as a 501(c)(4) social welfare organisation, a status that generally does not require it to disclose its funding to the Federal Election Commission; such groups may advocate on issues but cannot directly campaign for specific candidates.
