## Key points

- California transplants in Texas say they are voting for Democrats.
- The author argues their votes could affect close races and the state’s political direction.
- Some longtime residents fear newcomers will bring the policies they left behind.

## Summary

The article argues that Californians who have moved to Texas for lower living costs are helping shift its politics towards the Democrats. The author says newcomers may influence close state races and Texas’s longer-term political direction, while some longtime residents worry that the policies they left California to escape could follow them.

The writer describes meeting four California transplants in McKinney who support Democrats, including two who cited social services, public transport and the right to move between states. Longtime Texan Terry and visitor Clint voiced concerns about political change; the article also points to migration into Arizona and Montana, and to Northern Virginians moving to West Virginia. It frames migration, alongside immigration, as a challenge for Republicans in traditionally red states.
