World champion Wu Yize was knocked out of the English Open in the third round after a 4-1 defeat to Welsh prospect Liam Davies in Brentwood, in one of the tournament's biggest upsets so far. The 20-year-old Davies raced into a 3-0 lead, aided by a break of 105, and held on as Wu failed to find his best form, securing the first ranking-event quarter-final of his young career.

Davies will now face fellow Welshman Mark Williams, the three-time world champion, in Friday's quarter-finals after the 51-year-old beat Barry Hawkins 4-1 with breaks of 76, 103 and 63. Elsewhere, Mark Selby's bid for another final ended in a 4-3 loss to Kyren Wilson despite leading 2-0 with an early 112 break, while Judd Trump edged past Anthony McGill 4-3 to set up a last-eight meeting with Shaun Murphy, who beat Pang Junxu after midnight with a decisive 103 break. Ali Carter, Zhou Yuelong and Ding Junhui also progressed to the quarter-finals.
