Day of action targets estate hit by fly-tipping

Scores of staff and volunteers took part in a clean-up day on the Wensley estate in Sheffield, next to Page Hall, which has been blighted by fly-tipping. Social housing provider Arches joined forces with Sheffield City Council to gather litter, clear weeds and provide nine skips for residents to dispose of unwanted items, while also knocking on doors to engage tenants.

Arches Housing said it holds around six such "neighbourhood days" each year in areas where it owns many properties. Chief executive Dean Fearon said people who struggle to fund the disposal of items can inadvertently blight communities, while the council's John Hudson said the effort combined education and enforcement, helped those without vehicles to remove bulky waste, and should reduce the money spent clearing fly-tipped rubbish. Resident Mohamed Alhalmi welcomed the help but said people should ideally take waste to the tip themselves, adding that the estate's poor reputation was undeserved.
