DC Officially Unveils New Joker

Collider · 1 hour ago

DC Studios has revealed the first look at its new Joker in *Batman: Caped Crusader* Season 2, voiced by *House of the Dragon* actor Matthew Needham. The character marks a striking departure from recent depictions, drawing on the Joker's earliest comic book roots and German Expressionist cinema to portray him as a cold, humourless European criminal rather than the theatrical, wisecracking figure familiar from other adaptations. It matters because the Joker remains one of fiction's most closely watched villain roles, previously shaped by performances from Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Mark Hamill, so any new interpretation draws significant scrutiny.

Needham described his version as "very serious, very cold, not fun, but absolutely evil." In the season, this Joker is unmasked as the mastermind behind a toxin spreading through Gotham that causes uncontrollable laughter, targeting broadcaster Hattie Tetch before setting his sights on Mayor Jessop. The storyline culminates in a rooftop confrontation with Batman, in which the Joker is impaled and apparently killed, though the show leaves his fate ambiguous. *Batman: Caped Crusader*, an Elseworlds-style series unconnected to the main DC Universe continuity, is produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Amazon MGM Studios and Bad Robot, and is now streaming on Prime Video.
