The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reportedly killed more than 2,000 people, prompting infectious-disease experts to highlight the severity of the humanitarian crisis. They said Americans should be aware of the outbreak while recognising that the immediate risk of widespread transmission in the United States remains low.

The virus has spread rapidly through parts of eastern and north-eastern DRC, where health systems and outbreak-control efforts face significant challenges. Experts emphasised that Ebola is mainly transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, meaning effective surveillance, isolation and public-health measures are central to containing it.
