Deadly nor’easter turns streets to rivers as 65mph winds and torrential rainfall wreaks havoc while flights are urgently stopped… and there’s even more destruction to come
A deadly nor’easter battered the US East Coast, causing flooding, power cuts, fallen trees, dangerous surf and widespread travel disruption. At least one person died, another was missing and several others were injured, while officials warned that severe conditions and further destruction could continue into Monday.
More than 100,000 people were without power, with winds reaching 65mph and waves rising to 18ft near Fire Island. Over 400 flights were halted at airports in New York and New Jersey, while coastal communities in both states began evacuations; a Brooklyn housing authority worker was killed by a falling tree, and four people were injured when another tree collapsed at a playground.
