## Key points

- Trump renamed Lake Ontario "Lake America" via executive order
- Ontario, New York residents largely oppose the change
- Canada's Carney and Ontario's Ford have pushed back strongly

## Summary

Residents of the town of Ontario, New York, have criticised President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America", with many describing the move as an unwelcome erosion of the region's history. The decision, part of Trump's ongoing trade dispute with Canada, has been adopted by Google Maps for US users but has drawn a mixed response, including from some of Trump's own supporters, and has further strained relations with Canadian officials.

Trump signed the order on Thursday as part of an effort to make the "Great Lakes Even Greater", though it does not legally compel Canada or international bodies to adopt the new name. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, noting the lake's Indigenous Wendat origins and that its name predates US independence, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford erected a "Lake Ontario. Now and Always." sign in protest. Google said Canadian users will continue to see "Lake Ontario", while those outside the US and Canada will see both names, mirroring its earlier handling of the "Gulf of America" renaming. Reaction among the town's roughly 10,000 residents has been largely negative, though at least one local said she welcomed the change as a patriotic gesture.
