Def Leppard Guitarist Vivian Campbell Reveals Cancer Has Returned After Failed Transplant: ‘Just Don’t Give In’
Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell has revealed that his cancer has returned after a donor stem cell transplant failed to take hold. The 63-year-old first disclosed a Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis in 2013, saw it recur in 2015, and has now confirmed a further recurrence, saying he is continuing treatment to manage the disease. He shared the news in an interview with El Salvadorian radio station YSKL, reflecting on how he has stayed positive throughout his illness.
Campbell said the transplant, carried out in January 2025 after his condition worsened significantly in the winter of 2023, "didn't stick", and he now plans to attempt another transplant with a different donor within the next few years. In the meantime, he intends to keep touring with Def Leppard, perform with his side project Last in Line, and continue rally car racing, saying that staying busy and passionate about his work helps him cope. He credited catching the cancer early with making it more manageable and urged others facing a diagnosis to overcome their fear and "just don't give in".
