Deleted Highlander Action Sequence With The Kurgan Was Cut Because It Was ‘Too Good,’ Actor Says

IGN · 4 hours ago

A fencing actor named Alex King has revealed why his sword fight scene with Clancy Brown's villain The Kurgan was cut from the 1985 film Highlander, telling The Telegraph that filmmakers believed the sequence was simply too impressive. King, who played an immortal called Yung Dol Kim beheaded by The Kurgan, said he was never informed of the cut, received no screen credit and was not invited to any screenings, only learning the reason for its removal decades later.

According to King, fight choreographer Bob Anderson (known for doubling in Darth Vader's lightsaber duels) had warned that the ambitious sequence risked overshadowing the film's main action involving Christopher Lambert's protagonist, Connor MacLeod. King, now 69 and a former regional level-4 fencing instructor, said he felt too inexperienced to raise objections at the time but now admits some lingering frustration, while remaining largely philosophical about the decision. The revelation comes as a new Highlander film, starring Henry Cavill and pitched as "John Wick with guns," is currently in development with no release date yet confirmed.
