Delivery driver Colin Agyei has been jailed for six years after being convicted of causing the death of five-year-old Abdullah Ebrahim in Leeds in July 2022. Agyei drove the wrong way through a clearly marked no-entry sign to save time while making deliveries, struck Abdullah on a narrow backstreet and failed to stop. The case highlights the potentially fatal consequences of ignoring road restrictions, particularly in areas where children may be crossing or playing.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Agyei was travelling at about 15mph, although investigators said the road was unsafe at speeds above 7mph. Abdullah died in hospital shortly after the collision, while his mother, Salma Begum, described the lasting trauma of witnessing the aftermath and criticised Agyei for leaving her son in the road. Agyei was also banned from driving for more than seven years; the judge acknowledged his remorse but said Abdullah’s death resulted from an entirely avoidable decision made merely to save time.
