Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr., a Democrat, has criticised the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) after it suspended procurement activities involving the territory's housing finance authority. The suspension relates to concerns over potential fraud and misuse of almost $2 billion in disaster-recovery funding, and comes amid a wider push by the Trump administration's HUD to scrutinise how federal aid is being managed by state and territorial bodies.

Bryan described the suspension as a "shock" and pushed back against HUD's letter, calling it excessive. HUD Secretary Scott Turner has separately spoken of federal investigations into alleged fraud in Minnesota, suggesting the agency is broadening its oversight of disaster and housing funds across multiple jurisdictions, not just the Virgin Islands.
