## Key points

- Stevens’ polling-day hat drew attention online.
- Her late endorsement of Rogers angered Democrats.
- She cited concerns about El-Sayed’s rhetoric.

## Summary

The article reports that outgoing Democratic Representative Haley Stevens wore a large straw hat when she voted in Michigan on Tuesday, accompanied by her mother. The unusual look drew comments online, while the more consequential development is her last-minute endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, which has prompted anger among Democrats.

Stevens lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August but endorsed Rogers on Sunday, shortly before Election Day. She has criticised El-Sayed’s rhetoric and political associations, while maintaining that she remains a Democrat; her fiancé Jason Turkish has also warned that El-Sayed’s rhetoric puts Jewish people at risk. Stevens said she expected Democrats to win control of the House.
