- The AP called the race with Cooper leading 66.8% to 31.6%.
- The win gives Democrats a Senate pickup and ends an 18-year drought.

## Summary

Democratic former North Carolina governor Roy Cooper won the state’s US Senate race, defeating Republican Michael Whatley, who was backed by President Donald Trump. The result gives Democrats a significant pickup as they seek control of the Senate, and ends an 18-year run without a Democratic Senate victory in North Carolina.

The Associated Press called the race at 8:24 p.m. ET, when Cooper led 66.8% to 31.6%. The 69-year-old, a two-term governor, will succeed Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who did not seek another term. Whatley, 58, formerly chaired the Republican National Committee; Republicans had initially set aside $71 million for the race but spent $30 million before shifting $10 million to Kansas.
