## Key points

- El-Sayed wins Michigan’s Senate race.
- He is set to become the first Muslim US senator.
- Democrats also retake both chambers of Congress.

## Summary

The updated report says Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Senate race against Republican Mike Rogers, making him the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. His victory came as Democrats retook control of both chambers of Congress, in a wider midterm surge that included gains in several states Donald Trump had won in 2024.

The article gives no final vote margin. El-Sayed faced a late endorsement of Rogers by former Democratic primary rival Haley Stevens, but his campaign raised $2.4 million on Sunday, its largest single-day total; Barack Obama also backed him. El-Sayed focused on living costs and fuel prices, then about $4.83 a gallon in Michigan, while Trump campaigned for Rogers and attacked El-Sayed and his supporters.
