## Key points

- Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Senate race by nearly six points.
- He is the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
- His campaign focused on healthcare costs and economic hardship.

## Summary

Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s US Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of Congress. His win matters as he takes a key seat from retiring Democrat Gary Peters and brings a campaign centred on universal healthcare and economic hardship to the Senate.

The 42-year-old medical administrator held a lead of nearly six points when networks called the race, despite a last-minute endorsement of Rogers by congresswoman Haley Stevens, whom El-Sayed had beaten in the primary. Republicans attacked him as a communist and a terrorist, while he drew large crowds across the state and support from unions and activists. His victory also makes him the first Democratic doctor in the Senate since 1969.
