## Key points

- Gina Hinojosa has beaten Greg Abbott for Texas governor.
- She will be the state’s first Latina governor.
- Democrats also won Texas’s US Senate race.

## Summary

Democrat Gina Hinojosa has defeated Texas governor Greg Abbott, ending his bid for a fourth term and breaking Republicans’ long hold on the state’s highest executive office. Her win makes her Texas’s first Latina governor and gives Democrats their most consequential statewide victory there in a generation.

Hinojosa, a five-term state representative from Austin, entered the race as an underdog against Abbott’s fundraising advantage and political profile, but polls later showed a close contest. She campaigned on public education and affordability, and opposed the expansion of large datacentres. Democrat James Talarico also won a US Senate seat, defeating Republican Ken Paxton, who will be succeeded as attorney general by Democrat Nathan Johnson.
