## Key points

- Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott in a major upset.
- She will be Texas’ first Latina governor.
- Republicans still hold a majority in the state legislature.

## Summary

Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to become Texas’ first Democratic governor in more than 30 years and its first Latina governor. The upset gives Democrats control of the governor’s office in a state long considered a Republican stronghold, and could make Texas a more competitive battleground in future elections.

Hinojosa, a 52-year-old state legislator from Austin, began her campaign with little money or name recognition. She criticised Abbott over costs, corruption and the growth of energy-hungry data centres, while proposing a one-time $1,500 payment to residents funded from the state’s emergency savings. Abbott’s campaign spent $180 million, but Republicans retain a majority in the state legislature, which will limit Hinojosa’s power.
