## Key points

- Stevens drew attention for a large straw hat at the polls.
- She endorsed Republican Mike Rogers after losing the Democratic primary.
- Her late switch angered Democrats and prompted staff resignations.

## Summary

Haley Stevens, a departing Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, drew online ridicule for wearing a large straw hat while voting alongside her mother. The attention came amid a political row over her last-minute endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, after losing the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed.

Stevens endorsed Rogers on Sunday, reversing what she had reportedly told fellow Democrats earlier that day. She said El-Sayed had become increasingly angry and criticised his appearances with streamer Hasan Piker, while her fiancé Jason Turkish argued that El-Sayed’s rhetoric put Jews at risk. The endorsement prompted criticism from Democratic lawmakers and resignations among her staff; Stevens said her decision was firm and predicted Democrats would win control of the House.
