## Key points

- Jon Ossoff wins re-election in Georgia.
- He defeated Republican Mike Collins.
- The result retains a Democratic Senate seat in the South.

## Summary

Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff has won re-election to the US Senate in Georgia, defeating Republican Congressman Mike Collins in a closely watched midterm contest. The result preserves a Democratic seat in a state that narrowly backed Donald Trump in 2024, with implications for the balance of power and Democratic influence in the South.

Ossoff, in office since 2021 and the state’s first Jewish senator, campaigned on affordability, healthcare and government accountability; Collins focused on Trump’s agenda, immigration enforcement and shrinking government. With 56 per cent of votes counted, Ossoff led 63 per cent to 29 per cent, according to the Associated Press. After the race was called, he said voters had rebuked Trump and criticised what he called divisive, self-interested politics.
