## Key points

- Three Mamdani-backed progressives won New York congressional seats.
- Kathy Hochul secured another term as governor.
- New York Democrats are seeking to make Hakeem Jeffries House speaker.

## Summary

Progressive candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won three congressional seats in Tuesday’s midterm elections, reinforcing the city’s shift towards a younger, more progressive Democratic leadership. Their victories add to a broader Democratic sweep and could strengthen efforts to challenge President Donald Trump’s policies in Congress.

Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez won in districts that had strongly favoured Democrats and were expected to win after their June primaries. All three have opposed US military aid to Israel; Valdez said she would wait to see whether Trump followed through on his pledge to end annual aid. Kathy Hochul also won re-election as New York governor, and she and lieutenant governor-elect Adrienne Adams made history as the state’s first all-woman gubernatorial ticket to win election.
