## Key points

- Democrats won control of both houses of Congress.
- The results mark a sharp rebuke to Trump’s Republicans.
- Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim US senator.

## Summary

Democrats have taken control of both chambers of the US Congress, flipping Republican seats in several states. The result is a major setback for President Donald Trump’s party and is being treated as a verdict on his presidency, even though he was not on the ballot.

With counting still under way, Democrats had won 228 House seats and were leading in 34 more; in the Senate, they had won 54 seats and were ahead in another. They also held 28 governorships, compared with 20 for Republicans, while two races remained uncalled. Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
