## Key points

- Democrats won control of the House and Senate.
- The result limits Trump’s ability to advance his agenda.
- Democratic leaders are signalling investigations into the administration.

## Summary

Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and his party. The result gives Democrats greater power to scrutinise the administration and makes it harder for Trump to advance his agenda during his final two years in office.

Voters’ concerns included high prices, the Iran war and government corruption. Democrats made gains in states Trump had won by double digits in 2024, and Republican Senator Susan Collins lost her seat in Maine to Troy Jackson. Democratic leaders have signalled plans for investigations into senior officials and scrutiny of Trump’s family finances; Trump said he would accept the results and threatened to veto Democratic legislation.
